Our Mission: Founded in 1983, UMAR’s mission is to promote community inclusion, independence and growth for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities through residential, employment and cultural enrichment opportunities.

UMAR is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and an agency and ministry of the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. Our 23 group homes and 6 apartments allow individuals to experience independent living in a home-like atmosphere.

UMAR is now CARF-accredited for the following services: - Community Housing - Supported Living - Community Integration - Job Development - Job Supports CARF accreditation recognizes quality organizations committed to the pursuit of excellence.

UMAR currently operates 23 group homes and 6 apartments all across Western North Carolina. On average, group homes are approximately 3,000 sq. ft. with 7 bedrooms (one for overnight staff) and common living areas. In this home-like atmosphere, residents learn independence and enjoy a social environment that is not available in other long-term care settings. Staffing in group homes is handled around-the-clock by trained Residential Counselors. UMAR's group homes have live-in staff that work 7-days on and 7-days off. A couple of group homes require 3 shifts of awake staff due to the needs of the residents. Apartment homes only require up to 20 hours of residential care per week (depending on the needs of the individuals). UMAR provides services for individuals in their parent/guardian’s home or in their own home.

Two homes are located in Greensboro:  Bowden Home is for women which is located on Muir's Chapel Rd. and the men's home is on Westridge Rd.
